The Graphic Design Textbook: An Introduction

We Wrote a Book

It’s true, we wrote a book on graphic design. We plan on publishing the entire book in easy to digest blog posts. This is the first post. Welcome. Thanks for coming. Eventually the entire book (blog series) will be on our site as a free resource for anyone that wants to learn more about graphic design.

Most graphic design books focus on glorifying already created design as an art form that exists in a vacuum (and we love those books). However, graphic design does not exist independently; it is a collaborative commercial effort between a designer and a client. Graphic design is not simply an end product, but instead a methodical process that can be repeated time and time again to ensure success. This book doesn’t focus on the study of existing graphic design work, it focuses on the graphic design process from before the project begins until after it ends, revealing the secrets to creating thoughtful and innovative graphic design solutions.

The Graphic Design Textbook is a practical step-by-step guide to creativity that not only proves helpful for those just starting out, but also contains valuable insights for experienced designers who want to improve their design skills.

Before We Begin

Successful graphic designers implement a method; they don’t rely on chance. No one can simply get lucky time after time. Instead, a solid process is needed to cultivate eureka moments and to take those moments and turn them into working art. The process can be a bit of a balancing act between the two sides of the brain—the rational and logical—guiding the intuitive and creative.

This book aims to walk you through the graphic design process with an emphasis on logical structure to cultivate creative thought, from the initial meeting with a client all the way through the final deliverable product—a true, how-to, step-by-step guide to creating winning graphic art.

Designing is fun and rewarding—and if you’re good enough and dedicated enough, can become a vocation. Whether you’re a beginner just getting your feet wet or a seasoned professional with years of experience we hope you find this book helpful.
